The Memorial Complex to the Battle of Sardarapat
The Memorial Complex to the Battle of Sardarapat is written in golden letters in the history of Armenia. It was in Sardarapat that the conquest of Armenia by Turkey and the final annihilation of the Armenian people were prevented. By pure coincidence the 2 fatal battles the Avarayr and Sardarapat - took place on the same day of the same month - 26 May 451 and 26 May 1918, respectively. May is the month of Armenian victories, which started in Avarayr and continued to Sardarapat, Bash Aparan, Gharakilisa and Shoushi. In 1945, the heroic sons of Armenia marched into Berlin. In the history of the national liberation straggle the Avarayr-Sardarapat-Shoushi trilogy is the absolute symbol of the victory of the Armenian people.

Sardarapat is the expression of the will power and unity of the Armenian people. Sardarapat is the same to Armenians as Borodino to Russians, Shipka to Bulgarians and Thermopylae to Greeks.

In 1968, a memorial was opened to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the heroic battle (architect: R. Israelyan). The architecture of the memorial is unprecedented.

The memorial to the battle of Sardarapat was built on the basis of the principles of medieval Armenian classical architecture with a new solution. The emotional impression of the memorial is intensified by the magenta tufe of Armavir against the transparent blue of the sky.

The Bell-Tower catches the eye at a large distance. Its transparent lightness is stressed by the background of the massive sculptures of the winged bulls. Every year the bells of the tower toll on the Victory Day. The bells sound the victory of the people. If needed, they will toll again.

2 massive Winged Bulls stand face to face at the entrance to the Memorial. Since ncient times the bull has symbolized fertility, will power, persistence, might and is the traditional protector of national sanctuaries of Armenian art.
