St.
Hripsimeh Cathedral(618) the first wonder of Armenian architecture, towers at the
east end of the town. It stands on a slight elevation, at the eastern edge of
Vagharshapat City. Its expressive silhouette, seen from afar, stands up sharply
against the background of an emerald-green valley dominated by the snow-capped
Mt. Ararat.
In VII c.,
Sebeos called it a precious grain of wheat and pearl. It was built by
Catholicos Komita I Aghtsetsi (615-628). He was an expert in architecture, a
renowned songwriter and a poet.
The name of
the cathedral is associated with the martyr Virgin Hripsimeh.
Hripsimeh
is a classical example of a centre-domed cruciform church. It strikes with its
simplicity, fascinating austerity and monumental beauty.
This church together with other nearby
sites is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
