Garni: temple of the sun
The pagan temple is situated in the village of the same name in the Kotayk District. The palace complex included several disconnected buildings: a temple, a presence chamber, a columned tall, a residential block, a bath-house, etc.

The Garni Fortress(III BC) is the largest cultural centre of pre-Christian Armenia. For over 1000 years the fortress survived by virtue of its powerful defence system. This is testified by Tacitus.

The fortress stands on a triangular promontory. The river Azat flows with  gentle noise 300m down the rock and the Geghama Range towers to the sky around it.

The ruins of secular and worship building have been preserved inside the walls whose compositional centre is the pagan Temple of the Sun (I c). It was dedicated to Mihr (Mitras), the god of the sun. Mihr that came to replace God AR, appears in the escort of a bull.

The temple of Garni is a brilliant example of Hellenistic culture. By its plan, it is a rectangular gallery, which, on the outside, is surrounded with 24 columns symbolizing the 24 hours of the day.

Garni with Geghard monastery is included in UNESCO Heritage list.
